We are glad to introduce you to Colin Cairns, one of our Callan Method teachers.

Hi Colin,

- Could you tell us a bit more about yourself: hobbies, interests, dreams? I love travelling - I try to visit at least four or five countries per year. I always take my camera with me as photography is another of my big interests. I get inspired by beautiful landscapes and interesting cities, especially those that are less well known.

- Why did you decide to become a teacher? After I graduated from university I volunteered with an organisation that helped refugees adapt to life in the UK. Many of them spoke little or no English and I got a lot of satisfaction from helping them improve their language skills. That’s when I knew I’d like to become a teacher one day.

- How long have you been teaching English for? I got my first teaching job in 2002 in Japan. My intention was to go there for a year but in the end I stayed for six! I’ve continued teaching since then.

- What is your teaching philosophy? I always tell my students not to be afraid of making mistakes; they’re an important part of the learning process. Also, to remind them accuracy isn’t necessarily always the goal – sometimes getting your point across is all that’s required! Creating a friendly, relaxed environment where students feel comfortable to express themselves is key to this approach.

- Could you please give some tips on how to get the most of a Callan Method lesson? The method requires focus and engagement – you’ll learn not only from the questions the teachers ask you but also from the answers of the other students. Notice the patterns that emerge in questions, for example the choice of tense – as there’s so much repetition this should get easier for you and you’ll gain confidence overall.

- What do you like the most in ABC School of English? Working in a small school such as ABC has many advantages – there’s a supportive, friendly atmosphere and you can easily see the progress your students are making. It’s also a great place to meet people from all over the world from so many different walks of life.
