Fat Thursday tradition
Why is it called Fat Thursday?
Because it is all about eating as many sweets as possible before Lent begins. It happens every February on the last Thursday before Ash Wednesday when the period of lent starts. Many people give up something they love, especially sweets until Easter Sunday.
The story of Fat Thursday goes back to paganism. It was a day to celebrate the departure of winter and the arrival of spring. The feast was based on eating fatty foods, especially meats and drinking wine. The snack of the day was doughnuts made of bread dough stuffed with bacon. Today is has been replaced with sweet doughnuts.
In many countries there are various variations of this day. They all come down to two things: have fun and eat to your heart's content! Pancake day is is celebrated in the UK and is fast approaching, 16th February! Get your pancake pan ready :-)
